When the school year ends, free and subsidized breakfast and lunch programs close for the summer, too. That means a pantry customer has to account for an extra 30 meals a week for every school-aged child in their home.
We can tell. Every year, the number of pantry visits ticks up from the end of the academic year in May before spiking in July or August.
As we partner more closely with the Dublin City Schools, we are hearing from teachers, counselors and principals that they are worried about their students who are experiencing food insecurity over the summer months when they do not have access to be fed at school.
- 23% of students enrolled in the Dublin City Schools are economically disadvantaged.
- Approximately 4,700 households in Dublin earn less than $35,000 which makes them more likely to experience food insecurity.
- Approximately 3,700 students in the Dublin City Schools are eligible for the free and reduced price lunch program.
